Lithuania’s Environmental Protection Agency has revoked the permit held by the Klaipeda Zoo association to establish a zoo, LRT reported on Monday.

An inspection on August 17 by the Environmental Protection Department and the Zoo Assessment Commission found that the zoo had not corrected previously identified violations within the required period and had failed to ensure visitor safety. The department asked the agency to revoke the permit.

The zoo had been given one year to address the violations. Authorities said it had failed to ensure suitable conditions for keeping and displaying animals, veterinary care and biosecurity. They also cited shortcomings in feeding and watering, meeting animals’ dietary needs and ensuring animal welfare and visitor safety.

The agency issued the zoo a warning in early September. After 30 calendar days had passed, it revoked the permit. The former permit holder must close the zoo within a period set by authorities, which cannot exceed eight months from the revocation.

The zoo’s former permit holder must cover the costs of relocating and treating the animals and other necessary measures, and remains responsible for their care. The agency said the obligation to provide proper conditions, food, water and veterinary care continues throughout the closure period, which authorities will monitor.
