The Karolinska Institute will announce at 12:30 on Monday who will receive this year’s Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. The press conference can also be followed through Novaator, ERR reports.

Last year’s prize went to US scientists Mary Brunkow and Fred Ramsell and Japanese scientist Shimon Sakaguchi for discoveries explaining how the immune system avoids attacking the body’s own tissues.

Statistics indicate that Nobel recognition for scientists’ breakthrough discoveries is taking longer. During the past decade, medicine prize laureates received the award an average of 26 years after publishing the work recognised as transformative.

The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine has been awarded since 1901. Since 2023, the prize has been worth 12 million Swedish kronor, about 1.06 million euros. Laureates also receive a gold medal bearing a Nobel bas-relief and a diploma.
