Voters in Latvia’s Latgale region are seeking greater security, more accessible medical care and attention to border issues from the new parliament, LSM reported. Voting in the 15th Saeima elections was calm, though turnout varied between polling stations.

Queues formed during the first hours of voting in Daugavpils and Preiļi, while voter traffic was steady in Ludza and Rēzekne. Many people interviewed said they had made their choice in advance.

In Daugavpils, voters said they wanted a government able to make difficult decisions and stand firm. Others called for security and energy issues to be prioritised, including preparations for emergencies such as storms. Voters also mentioned wanting a vision for a progressive future and a more united society. One pensioner said they hoped pensions would increase, noting they had a small pension despite 37 years of work.

Preiļi municipality saw strong voter activity, with queues forming before polling stations opened. It ranked second in Latgale for early voting, with 10.7% of residents casting their ballots in advance. Voters interviewed in Riebiņi and Preiļi said they had mostly decided how to vote beforehand. Some said they hoped the new Saeima would bring positive changes and take action.
