Riga to repair sidewalk after street works
Riga Municipality says it will repair a damaged sidewalk on Dīķa Street after residents complained that it was left in poor condition following roadworks, LSM reported.
Construction work on nearby Ulmaņa Gatve this summer required heavy machinery and deliveries of sand and crushed stone. Local resident Uldis said vehicles and materials were moved over the sidewalk, damaging it. He said the work could have been an opportunity to repair the pavement as well.
The municipality said the contractor followed the approved construction plan and that the works had not caused significant damage. Project coordinator Ieva Grīsle said the sidewalk had been in poor condition for years. She said its surface connected to older pavement and that missing or historically damaged kerbs had contributed to a dip and deterioration.
Residents disagree, saying the sidewalk is visibly worse after the works. The municipality said its engineers inspect sites after construction and record damage not caused deliberately or directly by the contractor. It has pledged to repair the sidewalk.
