Two specially designed polling stations in Liepāja aim to encourage public participation and make voting more pleasant, LSM reported, citing Latvian Television.

The stations at Liepāja’s Latvian Society House feature bright red elements near the entrance and cubes inside displaying quotes from Jānis Čakste, Latvia’s first president. More than 700 voters had cast their ballots there by the time of the report.

Several voters praised the design, saying it gave the polling place a more festive and welcoming feel. One voter said the red looked somewhat aggressive but suited the election setting.

The idea for specially decorated polling stations was developed six years ago through a partnership between Liepāja municipality and students from the Art Academy of Latvia. The design was created by the company H2E and implemented by local businesses. The project cost about 8,000 euros.

Liepāja municipality said it had organised various activities during previous local elections to promote understanding of democracy and give residents a positive voting experience.
