More than 1,300 activities and events for older people will take place across Lithuania during National Older People’s Week, which began on Thursday, LRT reported. The initiative, organised by the Ministry of Social Security and Labour, is being held for the third year in a row.
This year, 57 municipalities have joined the initiative, along with museums, art galleries, theatres, libraries, healthcare institutions, public health offices, community groups and other organisations.
Social Security and Labour Minister Inga Ruginienė said the initiative and the ministry’s policies aim to help people age with dignity and remain active. She said the ministry would continue working to improve policy for older people and encourage their participation in the labour market and public life.
National Older People’s Week runs until October 8. The ministry says the share of older people in Lithuania’s population is growing, as it is in many countries around the world.
The United Nations General Assembly designated October 1 as the International Day of Older Persons in 1990. The day raises awareness of issues related to ageing and older people’s living conditions, and promotes respect for older people among younger generations.
