Prosecutors close probe into newborn’s death in Alytus

LRT reports that prosecutors have closed a pre-trial investigation into the death of a newborn in Alytus, finding no evidence of an act that would constitute a crime or criminal offence.

The investigation was launched to establish the cause of death after emergency services were called to an apartment on the evening of February 21. A newborn who was less than a month old had been found without signs of life. Paramedics tried to resuscitate the baby but were unsuccessful.

Investigators said the evidence gave reasonable grounds to believe the newborn died after choking on food. A forensic medical examination found no external or internal injuries.

The decision to close the investigation can be appealed to a senior prosecutor.
