Inspectorate holds Riga hospital responsible for employee’s death

Latvia’s State Labour Inspectorate has concluded that the employer was responsible for an employee’s death at Riga East Clinical University Hospital in April, LSM reported, citing Latvian Television.

The inspectorate found that the hospital had not taken adequate workplace safety measures. The doors that crushed the employee lacked the required number of safety devices, and their sensors were insufficient in number and incorrectly positioned.

Latvian Television reported that the employee was crushed by doors in the hospital’s Radiology Department after the safety systems failed. The hospital initially said that an employee had been found dead at work on April 27. State Police opened criminal proceedings in April over a suspected breach of workplace safety rules that resulted in a death.
