Balvi to build two family-style cottages for 12 children

Two family-style cottages will be built in Balvi for 12 children with severe and very severe developmental disabilities, LSM reported. The children will live in a home-like setting rather than conventional institutional care.
The cottages are designed to bring daily life closer to a family environment. Meals will be prepared and household tasks carried out on site, with children from across Latvia taking part in activities suited to their abilities, Balvi municipality representative Zanda Arnicāne said.
Balvi is one of 10 locations in Latvia where the cottages are planned and the only one in Latgale. The project is supported by European Union structural funds. It will be implemented by the state-owned company Šampētera nams, while services will be provided by the State Social Care Centre Riga.
Work is expected to begin in 2028 and be completed by December 31, 2029. The project will also create new jobs in Balvi municipality.
