Baltic prime ministers set Rail Baltica completion for 2034

Estonia’s ERR reported that the prime ministers of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania agreed Tuesday that the Rail Baltica railway project will be completed in 2034, four years later than the previously agreed target of 2030.

In a joint statement following a video meeting, the leaders said Rail Baltica was a shared and strategically important project that would improve connections, strengthen competitiveness and security, and support military mobility.

They agreed to aim for the railway’s main route to open to traffic during the European Union’s 2028–2034 budget period, while staying as close as possible to the previously agreed schedule. The project’s financing will be one of the Baltic states’ main priorities in negotiations over the EU’s next budget, they said.

Construction already under way in Estonia will continue as planned, according to the State Chancellery. Further construction schedules, investment priorities and funding needs will be уточined between the Baltic states and coordinated with the European Commission and Poland.
