Lithuania to buy gun systems to protect military ships

Lithuania will buy 30 mm Sea Hawk DS30M gun systems from British defence company MSI-Defence Systems Ltd to protect its military ships, LRT reported, citing the Ministry of National Defence. The industrial cooperation agreement is worth 5.8 million euros.

The systems will be used by the Lithuanian Armed Forces’ Naval Forces to defend ships against airborne threats.

The Sea Hawk DS30M uses airburst technology and programmable ammunition, providing additional capabilities to counter drones, drone swarms and other airborne threats.

The cooperation with the British company will also cover research and experimental development in electromagnetic warfare and surveillance systems, as well as the integration of the gun systems.

“This agreement is not only about weaponry, but also about bringing modern technologies to Lithuania. All of this strengthens Lithuania’s defence capabilities and defence industry,” Defence Minister Robertas Kaunas was quoted as saying.

The systems are intended to strengthen ships’ peacetime capabilities and ability to carry out combat missions. They will also provide additional options for responding to potential threats including high-speed coastal craft, boats carrying explosives and terrorist attacks.
