Latvia to freeze salaries for ministers, MPs and other officials

Latvian Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs has signed an order freezing the salaries of several public administration officials next year, LSM reported. He announced the decision to journalists on Tuesday.

The freeze will apply to officials whose base monthly salary is set by applying a specific coefficient each year. They include the prime minister, ministers, members of parliament and a number of other state officials.

The State Chancellery previously told the LETA news agency that decisions made while preparing the annual state budget can limit or completely freeze salary increases.

For 2025, the budget law capped the base monthly salary indexation coefficient at 2.6 percent. Although the increase calculated under the procedure set by law would have been higher, the actual increase was limited to 2.6 percent.

When preparing the 2026 budget, the government decided not to increase the base monthly salary, setting the increase at zero percent. As a result, base monthly salaries remained at their 2025 level in 2026. A freeze for another year means they will remain at the 2025 level in 2027.
