Õnnepalu’s Lõpetuse ingel enters Loomingu Raamatukogu golden series

Estonian public broadcaster ERR reports that Tõnu Õnnepalu’s book “Lõpetuse ingel” has been published in the golden series of Loomingu Raamatukogu, a literary series. The book first appeared in the series in 2015.

In the book, the author travels for a month in autumn to an island in western Estonia, where he reflects on art and theatre. His letters inevitably turn to the battlefields of life, death and love, against the backdrop of nature’s timeless spectacle.

Eleven years later, Õnnepalu returns to the island and writes an additional chapter for the book. The work brings together the old and the new era, as well as the author’s old and new selves, while asking whether anything is truly old or new, or whether everything simply exists.

The book also includes a poem titled “The Angel of Ending”, dated 2007. In the accompanying prose, Õnnepalu writes that he has never encountered an angel of beginnings, while an angel of endings watches over every book, drama and work of art.
