TS-LKD nominates Daiva Ulbinaitė for Vilnius district mayor

The Vilnius district branch of the Homeland Union Lithuanian Christian Democrats has nominated parliamentarian Daiva Ulbinaitė as its candidate for mayor of the Vilnius district municipality, LRT reported on Tuesday.

Ulbinaitė, who was elected in the single member Riešė constituency, said she would focus on the seven issues most important to Vilnius district residents. She also plans to run an open campaign and invite residents and experts to specialised workshops.

Criticising the current Vilnius district municipal council, Ulbinaitė said changes in local government were necessary.

“It is time for the Vilnius district mayor to stop being a hostage of political arbitrariness in the municipal council. The Vilnius district is growing at an enormous pace, but is still trying to break free from nomenklatura governance. It needs a stronger impetus and more decisive, unifying leadership. We must change this,” she said in a statement.

Municipal elections will be held in spring 2027, when residents of Lithuania’s 60 municipalities will elect municipal council members and mayors. Municipal elections in Lithuania are held every four years.

The previous municipal council and mayoral elections took place on March 5, 2023. Voter turnout in the first round was 48.91 percent in both the mayoral and council elections.
