Rēzekne to gain €1.4 million pedestrian and cycle path

LSM reported that a roughly four-kilometre pedestrian and cycle path will be opened next year in Rēzekne Municipality, connecting the Sondoru-Šķenevas village with infrastructure already built in Rēzekne. Construction will cost more than €1.424 million.
The path will run alongside the A13 national main road. It will be 2.25 metres wide, have an asphalt-concrete surface and new lighting. The project also includes a drainage system and an automatic pedestrian counter.
Safety barriers will be installed where the path runs close to the road, while pedestrian barriers will be placed on sections with high embankments.
According to 2024 data, 351 people live in Sondoru-Šķenevas village. Lake Adamova and the Adamova social care centre are located near the road. The centre is an important workplace for local residents and people from the Rēzekne area.
Residents said that pedestrians and cyclists currently use the road because of the lack of an alternative, but that travelling along its edge is unsafe due to heavy traffic. They said they would use the new infrastructure.
“Why not? I moved to Rēzekne, and walking with children is a very good opportunity to get outside the city. There are many cars and it is a populated area. Children and young people also walk there, even when going to the care home. It is dangerous to walk here because people have been hit along the roadside. This should have been done earlier, when there was still a school here,” one resident said.
Another resident said cycling along the road was difficult because of the heavy traffic and the need to brake when vehicles approached. “If it is built, I will definitely use it. It is a really good thing,” the resident said.
Twelve trees will have to be cut down to build the path. The work has been approved by the Nautrēni administrative division of Rēzekne Municipality.
Construction is taking place along the A13 road between the Russian border at Grebņeva, Rēzekne, Daugavpils and the Lithuanian border at Medumi. During the works, the permitted speed for drivers on this section is between 50 and 70 kilometres per hour.
The construction is being carried out by Pamatceļš Ltd.
