Cyclones to bring rain and stronger winds to Lithuania

Several cyclones will reach Lithuania this week, bringing rainy weather to most parts of the country and stronger winds, LRT reports, citing Teresė Kaunienė, a forecaster with the Lithuanian Hydrometeorological Service.

The coming night will be variably cloudy. Brief rain is expected in some places, mainly on the coast and in parts of eastern Lithuania, while fog will form in the northeast during the second half of the night. Westerly and northwesterly winds will reach 5 to 10 metres per second. Temperatures will fall to 4 to 9 degrees Celsius, and to 10 to 13 degrees on the coast.

On Tuesday, a southern cyclone will move towards Lithuania from the southeast, bringing rain clouds. Rain will begin in Aukštaitija by midday and spread to most of the country by evening. It will generally be light, with moderate rain in the east. Northerly and northwesterly winds will reach 8 to 13 metres per second in gusts. Temperatures will reach 13 to 18 degrees, with the warmest conditions in the clearer western part of the country.

Rain will reach all districts on Wednesday as the southern cyclone moves over the country. Heavier rain is expected mainly in eastern and central Lithuania overnight, before spreading across the country during the day. Northerly and northwesterly winds will reach 8 to 13 metres per second, with gusts of up to 15 metres per second on the coast. Temperatures will range from 6 to 11 degrees overnight, around 12 degrees on the Curonian Spit, and from 11 to 16 degrees during the day.

Another southern cyclone will reach Lithuania on Thursday, bringing heavy showers during the day. Rain will be limited and brief in places overnight, but heavier and more widespread rain is expected during the day. Westerly winds will reach 8 to 13 metres per second, with coastal gusts of up to 16 metres per second. Night-time temperatures will fall to 6 to 11 degrees, reaching 12 to 14 degrees on the coast, while daytime temperatures will remain between 11 and 16 degrees.

The same cyclone will continue to affect Lithuania on Friday, when many parts of the country could receive heavy rain. Strong westerly winds will add to the unsettled conditions, with gusts reaching 15 to 18 metres per second in some places. Temperatures will remain similar, ranging from 7 to 12 degrees overnight and 11 to 16 degrees during the day. On the coast, night-time temperatures will reach 13 to 14 degrees.

Rainy weather is also expected over the weekend. Light rain will fall intermittently across many districts on Saturday, with westerly and southwesterly winds reaching 8 to 13 metres per second and coastal gusts of 15 to 18 metres per second. Temperatures will range from 8 to 13 degrees overnight and reach 12 to 17 degrees during the day.

Sunday is expected to be drier, calmer and warmer.
