National Alliance expels election candidate over posts on violence against women

Latvia’s National Alliance has expelled Valts Dalbins, a candidate in the 15th Saeima elections, after he published social media posts that normalised violence against women and made prejudiced claims about them, LSM reported.

The party’s board said Dalbins had publicly expressed views incompatible with the National Alliance’s values and had decided to remove him from the party.

In one post on X in September 2025, Dalbins wrote that there were “wives who should be beaten”. In another, he described women as “mentally unstable creatures” who brought death outside family life.

Dalbins is running 27th on the National Alliance’s Vidzeme list. Information on the website of the Central Election Commission says he is deputy head of the party’s Kekava branch.

His expulsion does not prevent him from standing in the parliamentary election. Registered election lists cannot be withdrawn, and changes may be made only by the Central Election Commission in cases specified by law, such as when a candidate is ineligible to run or has died.

Dalbins is the second parliamentary candidate to be expelled from a party in September. Earlier, Reinis Uzulnieks, the former welfare minister, was expelled from the Union of Greens and Farmers’ Latvian Farmers’ Union after driving under the influence. He also cannot be removed from the election list.
