Kristjan Mäe considered for defence ministry chancellor

Kristjan Mäe, head of the Defence Ministry’s Policy Planning Department, could become Estonia’s next defence ministry chancellor, ERR reported, citing Äripäev.

Defence Minister Martin Herem told Äripäev that the selection process was under way and that there were several candidates, but he declined to name them. He said the new chancellor could be announced next Wednesday or Thursday.

Asked whether Mäe could take the position, Herem referred to current and former Defence Ministry officials who might be suitable for the role.

Kristo Enn Vaga, secretary-general of the Reform Party, said he was not involved in the selection process but would be very pleased if Mäe became chancellor.

Mäe has worked at the Defence Ministry for many years. In recent years, he has led its Policy Planning Department and previously headed its NATO and European Union Department.
