LRT reported that Lithuania’s State Border Guard Service detained a Russian citizen on Thursday afternoon after he arrived in Lithuania by the Nemunas River from the Kaliningrad region.

VSAT representative Giedrius Mišutis confirmed the detention to BNS. He said the man was detained in the late afternoon and was being questioned. No pre-trial investigation had been opened at that time, Mišutis said.

According to the initial information provided by Mišutis, the man is a Russian citizen.

The Lrytas news portal was the first to report the incident. Interior Minister Martynas Katelynas told the portal in writing that the man had requested political asylum but would be sent back to Russia.

“After consulting with the services, a clear decision was made: the man will be returned to Russia,” Lrytas quoted Katelynas as saying.
