Margot Samel’s gallery has won the Young Gallerist Award at The Armory Show art fair in New York, ERR reported.

The award recognises and supports young pioneering galleries known for innovation, avant garde work and experimental approaches to art.

Samel’s gallery received the award for presenting works by artists Leroy Johnson and Sasha Brodsky at the fair, which begins next week.

“Gallerists generally do not receive many awards. It gives you much more freedom because you do not have to make every decision at the fair based on what might sell best. Instead, you can focus on what kind of exhibition you would like to create,” Samel said.

She said the award had eased the gallery’s financial pressure. Participating in an art fair is very expensive for a small gallery, and the period before the fair is usually the most difficult, she said, because bills have been paid, people have flown in and transport has been arranged, while sales have not yet begun.
