Election commission delays review of party’s alleged serious violations

Lithuania’s Central Electoral Commission has postponed for two weeks its review of possible serious violations by the Lithuanian Regions Party over its car rental arrangements, LRT reported. The commission plans to return to the matter on October 1 after receiving a request to delay it.

According to a commission document, the party used more than 34,000 euros from the state budget for financial operations related to car rental between January 2025 and the end of July 2026. The spending was not supported in accordance with the procedure set out in the Financial Accounting Law, and the party did not provide calculations supporting the rental price.

The commission said the party also spent nearly 11,000 euros from its funds on fuel for the car, violating the Law on Political Organisations.

The party rented the vehicle from fellow party member Vytautas Kamblevičius and did not substantiate its calculation of the rental price. The rental payments exceeded the market rate and amounted to more than 76,000 euros.

The commission proposes recovering the amount transferred to Kamblevičius and the money spent on fuel, totalling nearly 87,000 euros. It also proposes obliging the party chairman to ensure that supporting documents are provided in future for vehicles rented for party activities.

Based on the circumstances surrounding the car rental, the commission plans to contact the State Tax Inspectorate, the Finance Ministry, the Special Investigation Service and the Prosecutor General’s Office.
