Latvia opens terror-threat case over pro-Kremlin group’s ultimatum

Latvia’s State Security Service, known as the VDD, has opened a criminal case after a pro-Kremlin group threatened terrorist acts against companies supplying weapons to Ukraine, Latvian public broadcaster LSM reported, citing the VDD.

The VDD said it opened the case on September 9 after the group Global Citizens Against War 1984 published an ultimatum on its website the previous day. The group demanded that Latvia stop supplying weapons and ammunition to Ukraine and threatened terrorist acts against specific Latvian companies that manufacture and supply arms to Ukraine.

On September 10, the VDD detained one person in Riga and carried out investigative actions at the person’s home and in their car. The service is analysing data carriers and other items seized during searches. The suspect has been placed in custody as a security measure.

The group issued identical demands to Poland and Portugal, also threatening to target several companies in those countries if its demands were not met.

The criminal case was opened under the second part of Article 79.6 of Latvia’s Criminal Law. The VDD said it would provide information about the investigation as it progresses.
