Lithuania plans drone competence centre in Varėna district

The Lithuanian government has approved the transfer of 51.9 hectares of state-owned land in Varėna district to the Lithuanian Riflemen’s Union for the planned establishment of a Drone Competence Centre, LRT reported.

The centre is planned in the village of Druckūnai. The territory could also accommodate infrastructure for developing drone and counter-drone capabilities for the Alytus, Marijampolė, Kaunas and Vilnius regions.

The drones would be used only for training, meaning the noise they produce would be limited, according to the plan.

The land will remain state property under the government’s decision, while the Lithuanian Riflemen’s Union will receive the right to manage and use it.
