Radar near Varėna tracks object toward Kaliningrad

Military air force radar near Varėna detected a track moving towards the Kaliningrad region early Sunday, LRT reported, citing the Lithuanian Armed Forces.

The track was detected at 4:05 a.m. It was likely that the object had entered Lithuania from Belarus, the Lithuanian Armed Forces said.

At 4:25 a.m., the track left Lithuanian airspace and crossed the border between Lithuania and the Kaliningrad region.

The available data was insufficient to determine the object’s type. However, its direction of movement and other information did not indicate a direct threat to Lithuania’s residents or infrastructure, the armed forces said.

As a result, there was no reason to issue an air raid warning after the track left Lithuanian airspace. Fighter jets assigned to NATO’s air policing mission were not scrambled.

Over the past several years, seven suspected Ukrainian drones carrying explosives and believed to have been affected by Russian equipment have entered Lithuania.
