Rakvere Theatre opens season with play about losing a child

Rakvere Theatre is opening its new season with Vöötrada, a poetic love story about the loss of a child, ERR reported. Written by Vootele Ruusmaa and directed by Andres Noormets, the play premieres on Friday evening.

Vöötrada won Rakvere Theatre’s playwriting competition. It follows a married couple after the woman suffers a miscarriage and does not want another child. Her husband, who wants to become a father, tries to support her.

Actor Peeter Rästas said the production had grown stronger during rehearsals.

“After our first serious run-through, I felt that the play had become very stylistically pure, which I personally like a lot,” Rästas said. He said this was reflected in the production’s visual style, ideas, pace and rhythm.

Rästas described Vöötrada as challenging material for an actor. A fast-paced comedy is easier to perform because the audience’s response is immediate, he said, while the response to this play is likely to be more introspective.

According to director Andres Noormets, Vöötrada is a story about the values of life, including solidarity, understanding and forgiveness.

“These are basic values that today seems not to pay attention to, or seems to look past, as if they were old-fashioned,” Noormets said. “What matters is to put your hand on your heart and understand how it beats.”
