Mangaļsala water and sewer upgrade to connect southern district

Work to rebuild water supply and sewer networks in Mangaļsala, a Riga neighbourhood, will begin on Monday, September 14, allowing its southern part to connect to the centralised networks of Riga’s water utility Rīgas ūdens, LSM reported.

The first stage will take place on the Vecdaugava side, on Laivinieku Street near Atlantijas Street. Laivinieku Street will remain open, although temporary narrowing is expected on some sections.

The stage will include the construction of 950 metres of pressurised sewer main and 450 metres of water main. Part of the work will use trenchless technology, allowing pipes to be installed without digging an open trench along the entire route.

The most technically complex element will be building a crossing under Audupe to connect Laivinieku Street with Mangaļsala.

The next stage, from Audupe to the pumping station near 5 Albatrosu Street, is scheduled to begin in November. It is not expected to restrict traffic on Mangaļsala’s main roads, including Traleru, Albatrosu, Veiksmes, Stāvvadu and Mangaļsalas Prospect. Work on those streets is scheduled to begin in spring 2027.

Overall, the project includes 2.95 kilometres of pressurised sewer network, 4.6 kilometres of gravity sewer network, three new sewer pumping stations on Traleru, Albatrosu and Stāvvadu streets, and 6.75 kilometres of water supply network.

The work will be carried out by Tilts Ltd under a contract worth 5,556,723 euros excluding value-added tax. The project is financed through dividends paid by Rīgas ūdens to the municipality.

Most of Mangaļsala currently relies on local water supply and sewer systems. The systems and local treatment facilities are technically worn out and pose a risk to the environment. All construction is expected to be completed in autumn 2028.
