LRT reported that an elderly woman who became lost while picking mushrooms in a forest in the Ukmergė district was found and carried to an ambulance access point through difficult terrain.
The search began on Wednesday evening after the Vilnius County Police Operations Management Division asked the Wolf Squad, a group of dog handlers from the Lithuanian Riflemen’s Union, to help locate her. Nine members of the squad and six dogs joined the operation, as the woman was having difficulty walking and darkness was approaching.
Police officers soon found the woman, but she had exhausted herself and could no longer walk. Carrying her to a place where an ambulance could reach her took about an hour.
The rescuers crossed spruce forests, fallen trees, marshy ground and a river. They waded through water and dense undergrowth, with some arriving in uniform and others coming directly from their offices, the Wolf Squad said on social media.
The woman was safely handed over to medics. After seeing the emergency services off, the Wolf Squad also used the opportunity to train its dogs in nighttime conditions.
