Dogs that bit Carnikava children likely do not have rabies

Laboratory tests show that two dogs that attacked children at a preschool in Carnikava have sufficient antibody levels to protect against rabies, LSM reported, citing the Food and Veterinary Service.

The results, received from BIOR, the scientific institute for food safety, animal health and the environment, effectively rule out the possibility that the animals are infected with rabies.

The dogs will nevertheless remain isolated and under observation until September 17, when a veterinarian will assess them again.

The Food and Veterinary Service ordered the safety measures, including blood tests, after it emerged that the dogs had not been revaccinated against rabies on time.

On September 4, two dogs that had strayed from their owners attacked children at the Riekstiņš preschool in Carnikava. Several children and a swimming instructor were injured. Two children were taken to hospital by the Emergency Medical Service and were in stable condition. Police have opened criminal proceedings.
