Timpson says Estonia’s justice chancellor search will advance next week

Madis Timpson, chair of Estonia’s parliament legal affairs committee, expects the search for a new chancellor of justice to become more concrete next week, ERR reported.

Timpson said the issue would initially be discussed by future President Ülle Madise and incumbent President Alar Karis. He said he had not yet spoken to either of them about the matter.

“I think more may start happening then. Parliament is not currently in session. I think things will begin moving forward,” Timpson said.

Although he knows several people who could be suitable for the position, Timpson said he did not want to disclose their names.

He said the candidate could come from the judicial system and should be politically independent and a respected lawyer who wanted to improve life in Estonia.

The president must propose a candidate to parliament, but the nominee also needs sufficiently broad support among parliamentary factions.

Timpson, who leads the Reform Party’s legal affairs group, said he would bring any proposed name or names to the faction for discussion if legal questions arose.

In Estonia, parliament appoints the chancellor of justice for a seven-year term on the proposal of the president.
