Nausėda urges Seimas to focus on remaining term priorities

President Gitanas Nausėda has called on the government and Lithuania’s newly formed parliamentary majority to use the autumn session as a starting point for completing the remaining work of their term, LRT reported.

In a message read by presidential adviser Paulius Baltokas at the opening of the session on Thursday, Nausėda also urged lawmakers to maintain investment in defence and take concrete action to address the country’s deteriorating demographic situation.

“I hope that for the 21st Government and the newly formed Seimas majority, this session will become a starting point for joining forces and implementing the remaining planned tasks before the end of the term,” the president said.

Nausėda said the state budget would be one of the main themes of the autumn session. He described the budget as an expression of political priorities, rather than merely a set of figures, and said defence investment and national security must remain priorities while societal resilience is strengthened.

He also urged lawmakers to ensure that economic growth is felt not only in macroeconomic indicators but also in the lives of families, while meeting other strategic needs of the state.

Call for action on demographics

The president’s message highlighted worsening birth-rate indicators and called for statements about strengthening families to be turned into concrete decisions and measures.

“There is no single ‘silver bullet’ for solving the demographic crisis, but surely everyone would agree that it is impossible to hit the target without even trying to shoot,” Nausėda said.

He also called on the Seimas to adopt measures supporting sustainable economic growth, reducing the shadow economy and increasing state revenues.

Lithuania will take over the presidency of the Council of the European Union on January 1, 2027. Nausėda urged lawmakers to complete preparations successfully so the country is ready to address issues including EU enlargement, security and defence, and competitiveness.

As political parties prepare for upcoming municipal council and mayoral elections, the president also called on the Seimas to pursue a unifying national policy and give municipalities and communities more trust, responsibility and practical tools.

More than 550 legislative proposals

The autumn session’s work programme includes more than 550 draft legal acts. The government proposed 127 of them, Nausėda proposed 10, and Seimas members and parliamentary groups submitted more than 330 proposals.

The session will run from September 10 to December 23 and is scheduled to include 46 sittings, three of them dedicated to opposition groups’ agendas.
