Via Baltica widening expands to full 45-kilometre section

Construction to widen the Via Baltica highway between Pärnu and Märjamaa to four lanes is now taking place along the entire 45-kilometre section, ERR reported. The works are on schedule, with most expected to be completed by autumn 2027.

In spring, construction was underway along 25 kilometres. It now covers the full section approved for widening in the coming years on the Tallinn-Pärnu-Ikla road.

Hannes Vaidla, head of the Transport Administration’s western region, said drivers travelling between Tallinn and Pärnu should allow up to 30 minutes of additional travel time.

“In some places, traffic has already been redirected onto completed two-plus-two sections. Given the different contracts, the works are at different stages, and various structures are being built throughout the project,” Vaidla said.

The construction includes junctions, wildlife crossings and interchanges. Vaidla warned that traffic arrangements would change again before winter and urged drivers to take account of the approaching autumn period.

He said the construction process was broadly on schedule, although there had been some difficulties in delivering details for the structures. The projects are due to be fully completed in 2028, but most sections are expected to be opened to two-plus-two traffic by the end of 2027.
