Pikk Street Festival dedicates programme to Grandparents’ Day

The third Pikk Street Festival will bring together Tallinn Old Town residents, visitors, cultural institutions and businesses operating on Pikk Street on September 13, ERR reported. This year’s programme is dedicated to Grandparents’ Day.

The festival will open at noon at a window of the Mustpeade House building. Events will then continue along Pikk Street, in courtyards, museums, galleries and the street itself.

One of the festival’s highlights will be a Pikk Street picnic, where local restaurants will set a shared table for 300 guests. The music programme will run throughout the day, with concerts in courtyards and at Green Market Square, as well as performances from windows of buildings along the street.

Workshops will teach visitors how to properly preserve old photographs and explore the principles of safeguarding cultural heritage, archaeology and wooden raft-making. Green Market Square will also host a second-hand and flea market, while a garage sale will take place in the courtyard of the Tallinn Peoples Museum.

Festival tours will explore the history and cultural heritage of Tallinn Old Town. The Tallinn Peoples Museum will present a special exhibition, “Old Town Residents’ Collections and Stories”, created in cooperation with the Old Town Society.

The Mustpeade House has prepared a special programme featuring music, magic, history and dance. Its small basement hall will also screen films about Tallinn Old Town and Pikk Street, including “Courtyards of Tallinn Old Town” from 1976, “Ai-ai-ai! Drawing on Walls” from 1960, “Pikk Street” from 1966 and “Historical Monuments” from 1970.

In the evening, Sofia Rubina will perform at 6 p.m. at the rooftop cafe of Paks Margareeta. The festival will conclude at 8 p.m. with “Historical Electronic Music Concert: Grandparents’ Special” at the Estonian Centre for Contemporary Music, where the Estonian Electronic Music Ensemble, known as EMA, will perform electronic music from the 1960s.
