Firefighters extinguish Širvintos waste facility fire after 12 hours

Firefighters extinguished a fire at a household waste collection facility in Širvintos overnight after battling the blaze for about 12 hours, LRT reported, citing the Fire and Rescue Department.

The department received a report of a burning hangar on Kalnalaukio Street at 12:38 p.m. on Tuesday. The fire was extinguished at 12:37 a.m. on Wednesday.

Household waste was burning inside the hangar. The roof was destroyed and some electronic waste was damaged.

Five fire engines were deployed to fight the blaze. Because of possible air pollution caused by the fire, local residents within a one-kilometre radius were sent alerts.
