School places leave families uncertain after basic school

Many children and their parents spent the summer stressed and uncertain because it was unclear where they could continue their education after finishing basic school, ERR reports. The ETV programme Impulss will examine the difficulties young people face in securing a school place and why efforts to change the system failed.

Education and Research Minister Kristina Kallas, Tallinn Mayor Peeter Raudsepp, Kambja rural municipality Mayor Kajar Lember and psychologist Urve Uusberg will discuss the issue in the studio. Child ombudsman Ülle Madise will join the discussion during the programme.

To illustrate the shortage of school places, the programme will feature makeup artist Katrin Sangla, whose son completed basic school with an average grade of 4.1 but could not continue his education at a school near home. Sangla will describe how the family spent the summer searching for a school place for him.

Impulss will air on ETV at 8 p.m. on Tuesday. The presenters are Anna Pihl and Taavi Eilat. The editor is Mirjam Mäekivi.
