Rainy weather to dominate Estonia this week

Rainy and windy weather will spread across Estonia this week, with frequent heavy showers expected on Wednesday and Thursday, ERR reports.

The high-pressure system extending across the Baltic states will move east on Tuesday. A low-pressure system moving from the Norwegian Sea towards northern Scandinavia will strengthen southerly winds and bring moist clouds across the sea. Warmer air will also arrive, pushing daytime temperatures to around 20°C and eliminating the risk of frost.

Overnight, Estonia will have variable cloud cover, with scattered showers and a chance of fog in places. Southerly and southwesterly winds will reach 2 to 8 metres per second, up to 10 metres per second on the islands and coast, with gusts of up to 15 metres per second. Temperatures will remain between 8°C and 14°C, reaching 16°C on the coast.

Tuesday morning will bring partly cloudy skies and scattered showers. Winds will strengthen to 4 to 10 metres per second from the south and southwest, with coastal gusts of up to 15 metres per second. Temperatures will range from 10°C to 14°C, reaching 16°C on the coast.

During Tuesday morning, skies will remain partly cloudy with isolated showers. In the afternoon, cloud cover will thicken in western Estonia and rain showers will gradually spread eastward. Southerly and southwesterly winds will reach 5 to 12 metres per second, with coastal gusts of up to 16 metres per second. Temperatures will rise to between 17°C and 21°C.

On Wednesday, frequent heavy showers will move across Estonia from west to east, accompanied by gusty winds. Temperatures will range from 12°C to 16°C overnight and from 16°C to 19°C during the day, reaching 22°C in southeastern Estonia.

Thursday will be rainy, with stronger winds during the day. Temperatures will range from 11°C to 16°C overnight and from 13°C to 17°C during the day. Friday is expected to bring frequent showers, windy conditions and relatively cool weather. Saturday should have longer dry periods between showers, with a cooler night and a warmer day.

ERR weather forecaster Ele Pedassaar said a high-pressure system over the Baltic states had kept dense rain clouds away, but had also brought cool air. In southern Europe, temperatures rose above 35°C in Greece and Turkey under the southern edge of the same system.
