Public media journalists win Latvia’s journalism excellence awards

Several journalists and other staff members of Latvia’s public media have received the Latvian Journalists Association’s Journalism Excellence Awards in multiple categories, LSM reported.

The awards recognise professionally outstanding, socially significant and influential journalism, as well as authors, editors and other media professionals whose work strengthens quality journalism traditions in Latvia. This year, the jury reviewed 180 entries and presented awards in nine categories.

Aidis Tomsons won in the Interview category for his Latvijas Radio programme Krustpunktā interview with entrepreneur Armands Broks.

Dace Kokle, Armands Rudzītis, Ivans Milovs, Māris Justs, Uģis Jakubāns, Edmunds Rimšāns and Līvija Tilgase received the award in the Description category for the Latvian Public Media documentary film Ļauj man būt.

Iveta Lepeško was named Editor of the Year for the Latvian Public Media programme Izvēle Nr. 1.

Laine Skvorcova, a journalist with Latvijas Televīzija’s investigative programme de facto, received the Latvian Journalists Association’s special Courage Award.

A separate special award for courage, endurance and self-sacrifice in covering the realities of the war in Ukraine was presented to journalists and camera operators who have informed the public and documented Russia’s war in Ukraine, including while working in wartime conditions and near the front line.

The recipients were Latvian Public Media journalists and camera operators Gints Amoliņš and operator Ingus Graudiņš, Odita Krenberga and operator Aigars Kovaļevskis, Indra Sprance, Ina Strazdiņa and operator Ingus Graudiņš, as well as Ieva Vārna of TV3.

Luīze Lote Āboltiņa and Pauls Raudseps of the magazine Ir won in the News/report category for their work Saeima speaker calls for Trump to receive the Nobel Peace Prize.

Ilze Jaunalksne-Rēdere of TV3’s investigative programme Nekā personīga won in the Research and analysis category for the series The Timber Industry Case.

Sanita Karavoičika of the newspaper Vaduguns won in the Regional journalism category for her work Am I guilty without guilt…?

Rūta Kesnere received the Discoverer of the Year award for the LETA project Behind the Curtain.

LETA photographer Edijs Pālens won in the Golden Frame category for his photograph of Ukrainian skeleton racer Vladyslav Heraskevych.
