Latvia plans €28.3 million mine purchase

Latvia plans to allocate €28.3 million for mine purchases this year and over the next two years, LSM reported, citing the LETA news agency.

The Defence Ministry has prepared a government order to reallocate €8.496 million from the State Defence and Security Fund programme to the maintenance of the National Armed Forces subprogramme. The funding will support mine purchases without exceeding the total amount planned for ammunition stockpiles in 2026.

The ministry told LETA that the purchases are planned under the European Union’s Security Action for Europe programme, known as SAFE.

Further funding of approximately €9.912 million per year is planned for 2027 and 2028.

The ministry declined to disclose details about the type and quantity of mines planned for purchase, citing operational security.
