Lightning strike ignites farm building and house in Kėdainiai district

A lightning strike ignited a farm building and a nearby house in Kėdainiai district on Tuesday, LRT reported, citing the Kaunas Fire and Rescue Board.

Firefighters were called at 1:56 p.m. to Tujų Street in the town of Gudžiūnai, where lightning had struck a one-storey wooden farm building.

When they arrived, both the farm building and the nearby residential house were engulfed in flames.

The farm building’s entire roof, part of its ceiling and 80 square metres of walls were destroyed. Seven cubic metres of firewood, three tonnes of straw and household items inside the building were heavily damaged.

The fire also damaged the brick residential house. Initial information indicated that its wooden roof structures had been scorched.

Firefighters doused the premises with water and cut the electrical wires. Water was transported from a natural water source 1.5 kilometres from the fire.

Initial information indicated that there was no smoke detector.
