Estonian parliament begins presidential election process

Estonia’s parliament will hold the first vote to elect the country’s president on Wednesday, with a live broadcast from Toompea starting at 11:50 a.m., ERR reports.

The Riigikogu’s extraordinary session will begin at noon. The Constitutional Election Committee has registered Ülle Madise as the sole presidential candidate after 75 members of parliament nominated her.

Before the vote, Madise will address the Riigikogu. Members of parliament will then have one hour to cast their ballots. Once voting ends and any possible protests have been resolved, the election committee will publicly count the votes.

A candidate must receive the support of two thirds of the Riigikogu, or at least 68 members, to be elected.
