US-based Estonian contemporary pop artist Majorlilkween, whose real name is Alexandra Elisabeth Ljadov, told ERR’s Raadio 2 that life in New York has become chaotic following the release of her mixtape and the launch of a related event series.
“Life in New York is pretty crazy right now because I released the mixtape ‘Club Andra’ in May, held the first ‘Club Andra’ event and everything connected with it has been quite chaotic. Besides that, there is work and more work,” Ljadov said.
Ljadov moved to New York to pursue a modelling career. She said she does not consider life in the city dangerous, but stressed the importance of being aware of one’s surroundings.
She also said that although she has not forgotten her native Estonian, speaking it can sometimes be difficult because she thinks in English. While in Estonia, she practises the language and speaks it with her family.
Ljadov was brought to Estonia by Evert Poom, who organised the Moment party series in Tallinn. She performed at the event with Atlanta rapper Bali Baby.
Poom said he met Ljadov in New York in May, when her EP “Club Andra” was released. After discussing their plans to organise events, Ljadov said she wanted to perform in Estonia and later brought Bali Baby with her.
Bali Baby said she liked Estonia’s colourful buildings and visited Tallinn’s Old Town, whose medieval character she admired.
The two artists are also filming a video in Estonia for their joint song “Back of the Barbie”, released on Friday. Ljadov said parts of the video were filmed at Kadriorg Palace before the party, with additional scenes shot during the event.
“It is exciting to film a video in the country Alexandra comes from. Performing here is surreal,” Bali Baby said.
The interview was conducted by Marta Püssa for Raadio 2.
