Every first-grader in Latvia to receive school guide

Every child starting first grade in Latvia will receive a “first-grader passport”, a guide prepared by the Child Protection Centre to help them navigate their new school environment, LSM reported.

The guide explains what children can expect at school, as well as their rights and responsibilities. It uses simple language and illustrations to explain children’s rights to safety, education, rest, expressing their views, receiving help and protection from violence.

It also reminds children to respect others, treat belongings carefully and follow the rules. The guide explains, for example, that photographs of a child must not be posted on social media without their permission, and that children can turn to an adult if they feel worried or need help.

“I am worried, I can seek help. I must not be hurt, and I must not hurt other children. I should be friendly,” Child Protection Centre head Liene Kauliņa said, describing the guide’s content.

The material is also intended to help parents, guardians and foster families discuss children’s experiences at school. They will receive suggestions on how to connect the topics covered in the guide with a child’s everyday life.

Children and teenagers can call the free 24 hour helpline 116111 if they are worried about their studies or fear their parents’ reaction to their grades. The Child Protection Centre’s deputy head, Anda Sauļūna, also encouraged teachers to call the helpline if they have questions or concerns about a child.

No similar reference material had previously been available. About 20,000 children are expected to start school this autumn. The first-grader passports have already been delivered to all education authorities and will be distributed by class teachers.
