Čiurlionis arts school renovation will finish by July 2027

Renovation of the National Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis School of Arts in Vilnius is expected to be completed by July 2027, with some students temporarily moving to facilities in Baltupiai, LRT reported, citing the Ministry of Education, Science and Sport.

Since 2024, the school has been carrying out an energy-efficiency project funded by the Environmental Project Management Agency. The project covers buildings on T. Kosciuškos Street.

Renovation has already been completed at the Ballet Department, the utility building and the Dance Theatre. A contract for renovating the school’s central building, whose construction began in 1954, was signed at the end of July. The contract is worth almost 5 million euros.

The work includes replacing windows, insulating external walls from the inside, insulating the roof and floors above the ground and an unheated basement, and modernising the heating system by replacing radiators and their risers. A ventilation system will be installed, while the electrical wiring and lighting system will be upgraded.

The project also includes a remote solar power plant, which has already been purchased and is operating in Ramučiai near Kaunas.

The ministry said the work must be completed by June 30, 2027. Once the renovation is finished, classrooms are expected to be warmer, ventilation will be available for the first time in 20 years, and savings on heating could be used to improve educational provision.

Some students will not be able to study in the central building during the renovation. The government has therefore transferred to the school, until the end of August 2027, a building managed by Vilnius College on Didlaukio Street in Baltupiai.

According to the school, pupils in grades 1 to 4 will study at the T. Kosciuškos Street complex during the next school year, while general education classes for pupils in grades 5 to 12 will be held in Baltupiai.

Music students will have both their general education and specialist lessons in Baltupiai. Timetables for students in the Art and Ballet departments will be arranged to minimise travel between the school’s different facilities.

The temporary premises are in a former Vilnius College Faculty of Arts building adapted for arts education. They include classrooms, a concert hall, lecture rooms, a library and spaces for individual and group activities.
