Security academy opens academic year with record 440 new students

The Estonian Academy of Security Sciences opened its new academic year with a record 440 new students, ERR reported.

The academy held the opening ceremony on August 28 at the flag square of its Tallinn campus. This year’s admissions also produced the largest competition in the academy’s history, with 1,487 applications submitted through the public admissions process.

Of those admitted through the public competition, 276 began higher education studies. A further 164 students were admitted through an institutional competition, including 108 to vocational programmes and 56 to professional higher education programmes.

As part of the academy’s tradition, the rector symbolically handed copies of the Constitution of the Republic of Estonia to representatives of the first-year students. The constitutions will accompany the students during their studies and future service.

The new students were welcomed by the academy’s rector and representatives of partner organisations. Kristian Jaani, director of the academy’s Police and Border Guard College, led the ceremonial formation, while the Tallinn Police Orchestra provided the music.

The academy also began preparations to mark its 35th anniversary.
