Eppu Normaali ends 50-year career after final concert

Finnish rock band Eppu Normaali has ended its successful 50-year career, ERR’s Ringvaade programme reported. The band’s final performance took place at Tampere Stadium on August 8.

Over five decades, Eppu Normaali sold nearly two million albums, including 10 platinum records and five gold records. The album “Repullinen hitteja” ranks second on Finland’s album sales chart.

“It should be remembered that all of this took 50 years. It did not happen overnight,” guitarist Juha Torvinen said of the band’s popularity.

Torvinen said the group had an unusually broad audience, ranging in age from 16 to 70. Lead singer Martti Syrjä attributed the band’s lasting appeal to its songs and its many concerts, particularly during the 1980s.

Despite the band’s success, the musicians said they had never adopted the image of famous rock stars.

“Finland is such a small country. More or less everyone knows everyone. You can go to the shop completely peacefully,” Syrjä said. “When I go to the grocery store in Myllyjärvi, I might be wearing dirty work clothes or have dust in my hair, but I go in and out and nobody notices.”

When Eppu Normaali was formed in 1976, the band played punk rather than rock. It has also been compared with the British band Dire Straits, although Torvinen said he did not hear the similarity.

Syrjä said punk had remained central to the band’s work because its members had always followed their own musical vision rather than fashions or trends.

“We have always done what we want. We have not followed any fashions or trends, only our own musical vision,” Syrjä said. “In that sense, we have always been a punk band, and we still are. We continue to do what we want.”

Music journalists have described Eppu Normaali’s ending as marking the close of the golden era of Finnish-language rock music.

Torvinen said the band’s Finnish identity was inseparable from its lyrics. Translating them into English and trying to reach an international audience would have removed much of what made Eppu Normaali distinctive, he said.

The band members are close friends, and several are also relatives. The original lineup consisted of brothers Martti and Mikko Syrjä, their cousin Aku Syrjä, Juha Torvinen and Mikko Saarela. Sami Ruusukallio has played bass guitar since 1989.

The musicians said they had worked to maintain positive energy within the band, rehearsing extensively so that performances would run smoothly.

Torvinen joked that the secret to the band’s longevity was its long breaks between concerts. But he acknowledged that ending the work was significant after having played since the age of 16.

“Playing instruments and performing are in your blood. You have to be able to do it sometimes,” he said.
