Riga’s new Rail Baltica station set to open to passengers in 2028

The key construction works in the southern section of Riga Central Station have been completed, but the new Rail Baltica station will not open to passengers until 2028, LSM reported.

The engineer supervising the construction issued the contractors a certificate confirming completion of the main works on Wednesday.

The station has three high platforms, each covered by a roof. The platforms also have information displays showing train arrival and departure times, as well as video surveillance cameras. At present, tracks have been installed only on one side of one platform.

The southern section of the new station is designed to have six tracks, one of which will be used for freight trains.

European gauge tracks will not reach the station in the coming years. The new platforms will be used by existing electric trains, which will run to all electric train destinations, including Salaspils. Passengers will be able to transfer there to a high speed train running on European gauge tracks.

Electric trains are expected to reach the airport by 2030. The four tracks closest to the Latvijas dzelzceļš building are planned to be converted to European gauge tracks in the future, once Rail Baltica trains begin running through Riga.
