Heleza returns to music and self-discovery with new album

Estonian singer Heleza will release a new full-length album this autumn after a year focused on rediscovering herself and her music, ERR reported.

A few weeks ago, Heleza and Sämi released their collaborative single “Loe mu mõtteist” (“Read My Mind”). Speaking on Raadio 2, a radio station, Heleza said the song is about wishing people could sometimes read one another’s thoughts.

“Sometimes you do not want to say all your feelings out loud. You simply wish someone could read your thoughts and know exactly what you mean and want to say without having to look them in the eye and painfully force the words out,” she said.

While writing the song, Heleza immediately realised she needed a male voice alongside her and contacted Sämi. “Our voices, thoughts and feelings fit together. That is how it was born,” she said.

Heleza said she had placed greater emphasis on resting this year because, in addition to music, she has a day job that requires time and energy.

“This year I am back on the wave of discovering music and myself, which has been so lovely for me. At one point I felt I had got lost in the middle of music. Perhaps I did not know what I wanted to do, what direction to take, or what songs to experiment with and try,” she said.

She completed the new album over the summer after spending many hours in the studio. The record was made in collaboration with producer Karl Killing, with whom Heleza has shared a musical path for a long time.

“Working with him has always been very smooth. We know each other so well and are very close. That means there is no embarrassment in saying that I do not like something and that it could instead be this way. We can be open and honest with each other about such things,” she said.

According to Heleza, the album will include heartbreak, self-discovery, laughter and melancholy. “A little bit of everything,” she said of the record due out this autumn.
