Folk musician Lee Taul releases debut solo album

Estonian folk musician Lee Taul has released her debut solo album, “Like Moths to a Flame,” bringing together English-language original songs written over several years, ERR reported.

Taul said she uses English because much of her musical inspiration and listening experience has been connected with English-language songwriting. The album reflects influences including Joni Mitchell, Lou Reed, José González and Sybille Baier, as well as the sound of 1960s pop music.

The album opens with “Desert Storm,” featuring Hebrew-language vocals by Israeli musician and producer Galor Yefet, who also reworked all the other songs on the album.

“Drink Up” and “Flower” are the only tracks featuring additional guest musicians: Lauri Lüdimõis on piano, and Harri Heinsoo on guitar and bass guitar. The album closes with “Velvet,” one of whose images inspired its title.

Taul described “Like Moths to a Flame” as the culmination of a long creative period, bringing together songs written at her own pace over the past decade. After years of writing songs privately and recording them in her home studio, she said, they are now being released to the public for the first time.

Taul has previously performed with the groups Runö and Araukaaria. This summer, she also presented the concert production “Everyone Has Their Own Instrument” at the Viljandi folk music festival.
