Jakštys returned to prison after conviction became final

Remigijus Jakštys, convicted of molesting teenagers, has been returned to prison after the judgment against him took effect, LRT reported, citing the ELTA news agency. Kaunas Regional Police officers detained him on Friday and delivered him to a correctional facility.
“The documents were received, and he was taken to the correctional facility. He was detained at the addresses we had, and officers went there,” Odeta Vaitkevičienė, head of the communications division of the Kaunas Regional Police Headquarters, told ELTA.
Last Tuesday, the Kaunas Regional Court rejected appeals by two lawyers for Jakštys, a former youth mentor, seeking his acquittal on one charge of molesting a teenager. The court also rejected a request to postpone his prison sentence.
According to the case file, the offences took place between 2018 and 2020, when Jakštys carried out sexual acts involving victims aged 14 and 15, knowing their ages. He was ordered to pay €8,000 to three victims.
The panel of judges said the victim’s testimony was consistent and supported by other evidence collected in the case. After correcting a procedural error by the first-instance court, the final sentence was reduced from four years and three months to three years and eight months.
It is not yet clear how much of the sentence Jakštys will serve. Under current laws, he may be eligible for parole. His lawyer, Olegas Šibkovas, told ELTA that Jakštys intends to appeal to the Supreme Court of Lithuania.
Jakštys recently became the first person convicted of sexual offences to be granted parole after he and his lawyers won a case at Lithuania’s Constitutional Court.
On June 11, the Constitutional Court ruled that a provision barring parole for people imprisoned for crimes against a minor’s sexual self-determination or integrity was unconstitutional. The court said the ban prevented such prisoners from being assessed individually, accessing probation and complying with parole conditions intended to reduce reoffending.
