A 56-year-old man from Kaunas has been sentenced to seven years and one month in prison for severely injuring his cohabiting partner with an axe, LRT reported, citing prosecutors.

Kaunas Regional Court found V. K. guilty of causing severe bodily harm through torture and with exceptional cruelty. The previously convicted man was also recognised as a recidivist.

According to the case file, on June 16 last year, a conflict broke out at an apartment in Kaunas. While intoxicated, V. K. deliberately struck his partner with an axe at least 11 times, hitting various parts of her body. The attack took place in front of the woman’s minor son.

The court issued its verdict last week and imposed the sentence sought by the prosecutor. It also upheld the civil claims.

The investigation was conducted by officers from the Serious Crimes Investigation Board of the Kaunas County Chief Police Commissariat. Prosecutors from the First Criminal Prosecution Division of the Kaunas Regional Prosecutor’s Office led the pretrial investigation and represented the state in court.

The verdict can be appealed to the Court of Appeal of Lithuania within 20 days of its announcement.
