President Gitanas Nausėda has nominated lawyer Liudvika Meškauskaitė and legal expert Vytis Turonis for a seat on the LRT Council, LRT reported on Monday. The president will appoint one of the two candidates.

Meškauskaitė specialises in media law and is a former member of the council of the Lithuanian Lawyers Association.

Turonis is a lawyer who ran in the 2024 parliamentary election with the Lithuanian Farmers and Greens Union.

Under the current LRT law, institutions that appoint council members must publish information about eligible candidates in advance, including the list from which the appointee will be selected.

The president must appoint a new council member after Giedrius Jucevičius, whom he had delegated to the body in 2024, left the council in March.

The LRT Council, the governing body of Lithuania’s national public broadcaster, has 12 members. The president and the Seimas each appoint four members, with the parliament selecting two from the governing majority and two from the opposition. The remaining four members are appointed by the Research Council, the Lithuanian Artists’ Association, the Lithuanian Bishops’ Conference and the Lithuanian Education Council.

Council members serve six-year terms.
